# KANJIDIC2: source and changes

Generated by `npm run lexicon -- build`. Do not edit by hand: the unit
tests check every file here against `index.json` and against the address
the folder is served at (see below).

## Source

- Dataset: KANJIDIC2, https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/KANJIDIC_Project

- File: https://www.edrdg.org/kanjidic/kanjidic2.xml.gz
- Release: 2026-10-08 (database version 2026-281)
- SHA-256 of the file as downloaded: `5fc25740c21180e0c2983d3ed546a8009d7891d9dceb4714cd36dd528be2bb58` (1488582 bytes)
- Adopted into Kiku: 2026-10-08

## What Kiku changed

- Kept per character: on and kun readings, name readings (nanori), English meanings, stroke count, school grade, newspaper frequency rank, classical radical, and the pre-2010 four-level JLPT tag (`jlptOld`, not an N-level).
- Dropped: readings and meanings in other languages, dictionary indexes, query codes and variants.
- English meanings that would fail Kiku's served-bytes language check are withheld and counted (`w`). See `withheld` below.
- Split into `kanji/` by code point (the code point divided by 256, in hex).

## What is here

| | |
|---|---|
| databaseVersion | 2026-281 |

| withheld | 19 |

The record format is documented in `docs/LEXICON.md` and typed in
`src/lexicon/types.ts` in the Kiku repository.

## Where it is served

Kiku serves this folder at `/data/kanjidic2/<version>/`, where `<version>` is a
hash of every file in it, this one included, so a changed file always has a
new address. `data/lexicon.json` in the Kiku repository records the version.

## Rebuilding

npm run lexicon -- fetch # download, or reuse the cached copy, and check its SHA-256
npm run lexicon -- build # rewrite data/derived/ from it

A rebuild from the same file is byte-identical. To move to a newer release:

npm run lexicon -- update kanjidic2
